This freakishly phychadlic movie has many meanings to me. One being that in order to repent for something that you have done you need to first defeat your inner demons. This is prevolent in this movie b/c before Boshu(yeah I didnt spell that right, but you understand it) could finally forgive himself for whatever he did, he first needed to prove to himself that he is not a failure. This was done by him defeating the killer. Whether the killer was real or not didn't matter in this instance, because after winning the railing contest against the killer(himself???) he realized that he had finally became the "master of two worlds"(see I was paying attention/read) and was able to ascend up the escalators with his guardian angel into a new life. Another meaning I got from this movie was that self pity is never the way to go and you need to believe in yourself. Whatever Boushu did that made him believe that he needed to be punished, I don't think was that bad(seeing as Boushu was such a good guy). Who knows what would have happened had he not pitied himself and punished himself(yeah, we might not have had a movie) but he would have at least not found himself in a dead end, crappy job. His turning point in this movie was made possible because he finally got some chutzpa and stopped pitying himself and realized that he could do better in his life.
