so i dont have to clean the stac room...

AVATAR- today i saw the movie Avatar. No, wait...to even call it a movie is doing it injustice...this was an epic adventure. going into the theatre, i thought that it would be another cruddy scifi movie...."yeah so some dude thinks he is an alien...big fricken woop...does it have wookies and ewoks..no!!!" Boy was i wrong. Even just in the begining of the movie the characters reveal themeslves through things that you did not see. They leave you with questions like who is he? why is he there? which is answered as the door pannels open to a breathtaking view of the alien world deamed pandora. I'm not going to spoil the whole movie for you but i will tell some of my favorite parts/things. Thing #1- no "filler" diologue- the dioogue was very poinant- it either answered questioins (and then gave you more) or it explored relationships betewwn characters. There was absolutely no cliche ohhh I love you sooooooooooooooooooo much. Instead their eyes did the talking and honestly as the movie goes on, you cant even tell that the main characters are aliens at all, they are just people learning about eachother. Thing #2- Awesome acting by the main character- this guy was just awesome. You really connected with him from the very start. If i hadnt seen pix of him standing up, you would have whole heartedly believed he was a cripple looking for some hope. Thing #3- The scenery GORGOUS! my favorite part of the scenery becides the epic views and beauty, was the fact that the poinant parts of the scenery were either extremely bland which only made them more interesting or they were lit. Not like a light from the heavens (although it was a sacred tree). It was sort of glowing in a divine way- it was what the tree of knowledge wishes it would look like)---altogether you need to see this film....in 3d none the less and pay attention to every detail of everything because credit is needed where credit is due and believe me this director deserves credit.

facebook groups(the rant---soon to be a feature film!!!...naaazzzz)

Facebook groups...whats up with thaaaaaaattttt? But no, it is not a laughing matter. You may remember back in the "good ol days" of facebooks where yeah, there were groups, but they were somewhat poignant, like pertaining to a economic policy or a political party. They were meant to unite people with the same interests together under one page where they could be unjudged by people of the same beliefs. Unfortunately this is not the case anymore. These groups have become an epidemic that infect all of our newsfeeds slowly eating away at the valuable space, so much that instead of where the extremely urgent message saying "Help!!! I'm trapped in a well" (which was surprising in the first place because you didn't know that wells still existed or why he posted this on facebook instead of contacting, like, the police or something, but I digress) now reads "such and such has joined the facebook group "hey, I'm in a well!!!". They aren't even funny! I don't know how anyone gets joy out of joining the group "I also have a tongue!!!!" They are nonsensical and just plain stupid. Not saying that there aren't any poignant groups still out there, but they have been overshadowed by the large blanket of stupidity. And what makes it even funnier is that people create GROUPS saying how stupid other GROUPS are which people join, thus creaing another annoying GROUP!!!!! HOW DOES THAT HELP AT ALL!!!!!!??!?!?!?!?!?1?!?!?!?1?1?!?1?1/1?1?1!

STEPS TO CURE THE EPIDEMIC: When you click on a group take a second to think- are you joining because you want to discuss the theory of relativity as related to the quantitative theory of matter or are you joining becasue you too have two opposible thumbs and want to reassure the world. If you chose the latter please take an extra moment to think-- does the world really need to know if I have opposible thumbs by me joining this group created by some 30 something year old guy who is probaily still living with his parents at their home, or should I go out and physically show the world through interpretive dance......(just a sugguestion)

SOME ACTUAL GROUP NAMES: Saying the entire alphabet because you cant remember what letter comes next, I'm sorry I don't say hi to you anymore because you don't say hi to me , I Stand In The Shower for An Hour Because I like Hot Water. RA RA RA AH AH AH, ROMA RO MA MA, GAGA OOH LA LA. if all the lyrics i've memorized were facts, i'd be a genius.Waking Up & Seeing You Still Have Time Left To Sleep.Apples taste better when they are sliced. If Girls Have Period Pains, Guys Should Be Kicked In The Balls Once a Month.

SO PLEASE HELP TO STOP THIS EPIDEMIC BEFORE IT SPREADS AND CONSUMES THE WORLD....=)

THE MORE YOU KNOW!!!!

that sweedish romantic horror flick

1.
The backstory to this movie reveals to us that Oscar is a lonley, disturbed kid. Its funny becasue with the minimal diologue, you are still able to determine what kind of person Oscar is.

2. There is litttle to none camera movement in the whole movie. If the camera moves, it moves slowly and shakily, but not much.

3. During grusome scenes or where the whole of the scenery becomes important to understand the scene, the camera zooms waaaaay out, however during a scene with alot of diologue or a scene where minor details become important, the camera seems right infront of the character.

4. A character can be developed by their attitudes, body language, body structure, and dress.

Ex of how the director changed a character physcially --- Oscar's body type- has broader shoulders from working out more twords the end of the film.

5. Sound in this movie is used instead of gore... so instead of seeing a multilated body, you hear fangs going into someone's neck. Sound is also used during "imporant" or key parts of the movie, to emphasize its importance. Sound is never wasted. The worst parts of the movie are the parts you create for yourself.

6. Hakan- He seems to actually care for Eli---although i dont know their relation (is he observing her(him???.....lets stick with "it") as a scientist or is he a relative of Eli's? He appairently didnt care about the consequences of caring for Eli, seeing as he went on a murder spree to feed Eli.

7. i don't exactly know the signifigance of the puzzles but the scenes when we see the puzzles are when Eli and Oscar first meet and when Eli reveals that she/he is a vampire.

8. i believe Plot point 1 to be where Eli and Oscar meet. She/he is the one that convinces oscar to change himself by working out and standing up to the bullies thus changing the course of the movie.

9. Plot point two i think is where Eli reveals to Oscar that he/she is a vampire....the rest of the movie from then on explores their relationship.

10. Yeah, this is indeed a happy ending....Eli and Oscar are together and all seems to be well.....for now atlest.

well as all of you know today was the last day of workshops. All in all it was a good experience i learned some good things and had alot of fun. really all i want to say in this blog is two things. One that i am sorry to all of the people who have left me comments and are angry with me for not responding. My computer is messed up and does not allow me to read/comment on anything....so sorry. The second thing i want to get across is my current playlists

when we were young- the killers- an oldie but a goodie-its an anthem- with meaningful lyrics- all around good song

drops of jupiter- train- a ballodesque song- killer piano- its like a sung poem

simple song-miley cyrus- its a guilty pleasure......its not deep....its not that good of a song.....its just damn addictive!!!!

stuffed like a bird.....which i ate

Hey everyone, hope you guys had an awesome turkey day/weekend. Right now im not sure what exactly to say due to the combination of overindulgence and holy jolly cheer. I know thanksgiving is supposed to be a time of thanks and whatnot so first im gonna say something cliche and hopefully then get to someting that you want to read......im thankful for my family/friends/i pod/unfaling sense of humor. Now that, that is out of the way, i want to try and delve into what thanksgiving is all about. Thanksgiving is time where families get together to talk about the most important things....like the football scores and hannukah. That's all thanksgiving seems to come down to in present day, overindulging ourselves in a large bird and discussing presents while rooting for our favorite teams. Not that this is a bad thing, but it seems like thanksgiving has really lost its meaning with all of the stupid modern gimmics. All I am saying is that we should not only try to put the thanks in thanksgiving by saying how much you are thankful for your dog snuggles, but by putting the giving back in thanksgiving and just try to do something that you wouldn't ordinarily do, and give. Now im not saying that you should sell your house and give all of your money to Mr.Shaly the homeless guy down the street, but how about dropping a line to someone who is lonely, like a grandparent. Or how about instead of spending time playing your brand new video game, spend some quality time with your dear old mum. Small things add up.

the penultimatum

honestly not much to say. Today was our penultimate session with Joy. We got the final kinks out of our monologues and they are all honestly spectacular....(in my opinion at least).

I dont know if it is just me being me, but everytime i act, i think that i suck. Not just oh im being melodramatic, but that everthing i act as comes out suckish. This (hopefully) is not the case but whose to say its not. This actually could be just a kick in the ass saying that i really need to get into gear if i actually want to get anywhere in life. As my mom always says "What is going to seperate Alex Katz from Alex Katz from Alex Katz?" I guess you could say that where ever i am, i strive for somewhere better. What ever i do, i know that someone somewhere had done something better then that, and i just need to beat it. Its a never ending cycle that one day i hope to defeat, thus begining my Nirvana.......If you are into that stuff that is.

not much to say

Currently i've been reading the acclaimed novel The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy . It truly is an enthralling book with a very strange cast of character. From a maniacally depressed robot to a rockstar who decided to be dead for a year for tax reasons, this book never ceases to amuse. But that's not what i want to talk about. What i want to talk about is the reoccuring sub plot, that life, the universe (in its mindboggingly biggedness), and everything, fits together like a jigsaw puzzle, and that everything is pre determined (or post determined depending what time you are in......it gets quite confusing). It got me to wondering, what if this is really true? Is there anything we do to stop it, or will our every action, no matter how random it may be, be already recorded in the confines of history itself? Or perhaps, we may actually be able to change our destiny, thus changing ourselves and everyone around us?
I would honestly like the world to work this way, but it may not . However i wont let the predeterminedness of the universe stop me from being me and caring what happens...or i might....whatever the future tells me to do.......or someting along those lines........

"in my monologue"- first discovered in the ruins of SNLithica.....and believed to be written by the prophet Swift

Today in our workshops we further worked on our monogues (which i can finally spell without spell check YAAAAY)! I found it quite enthralling, if you will, to finally connect with mine. At first it seemed to me that my monologue was a farsical diologue which would be the punchline of a Monty Python skit. While this could possibly be the case, I was challenged to read my monogue while putting the bare minimum amount of "pieces of flare" on it. At first I was hesitant, to say the least, to conform to Joy's sugguestions. However i felt it to be worth a shot. After actually reading the monologue as a regular face to face "conversation" I realized that yeah, it did sound a bit better like that. The more i read the more i liked what i was reaidng and the more passionate I became about it, finally resulting in (what i hope to show next week when i have finished memorizing it) a profoundly done monologue that the writer whould be geninuely proud of.

p.s. ask me about the miley concert.....if you havent already.....ive got damn good stories............

Workshops

ok so im going to just come out and say it. I love this workshop. Joy is really an inspiration to us all. She is always true to her name and this helps us all come out of our shells. I mean just to start out the workshop with full body exersizes which allow us to go all out and express ourselves through nonsencical motions is so effective. Also the inspirational quotes she gives boost our morales so that we may try to make better our monologues. The exersize that she makes us do is also very interesting. To start off we just read our monologues straight off. This familiarizes us with them before the second exersize of reading in between the lines of the monologues. By this i mean that we try to recapture the ideas and emotions of our monologues without having them infront of us. This exersize allowed me (us?) to really strip down our compositions into what they were really about and the true human emotions that go with them. After this we reread our monologues using the various things we learned from reading inbetewwn the lines, thus creating a more realistic steeing and feel to our acting. Altogether i say that Joy is doing an awsome job and i look fowar to working with her more in the future.

Oh and as a side note...some awesome songs im listening to:
Zak and Sara-Ben Folds
Chelsea Dagger- The Fratellis
Human- The Killers
When You Were Young- The Killers
Moving To New York- The Wombats
Let's Dance To Joy Division- The Wombats
The General- Dispatch

t shirts

i figure that t shirt designs arent as easy as people make them out to be. I say this b/c not only do you have to make a neat design that everyone is happy with but it has to also have a deep meaning that people can relate to. On top of that you need a catchy slogan that fits with your neat picture. So instead of "STAC-We Are Cool" with a dragon on the front, it needs to be something like "STAC- We Are More Then We Seem" with like mystic/rustic looking drawings of the various symbols of all of the diciplines of STAC. This being said, for me, actually sitting down to complete this task is a total nusance. I mean yes my previous sugguestion was pretty sweet concidering I thought it up in like 17 seconds, but to me it had no actual astetic value. Oh yeah and i forgot to mention that this shirt needs to be something people would want to wear on a daily basis. Looks like its gonna be back to the drawing board for me......maybe somethng with sparkels....(nahhhhhh)

things i learned in stac

1. Everything is not what it seems means, for example, that everyday colors that you see in the world are not always what they are steryotypically viewed to be like trees. I've learned through many coloring books to always color my trees brown. WRONG! THEY'RE PURPLE, PURPLE I TELL YOU!(strangely this leads to inquisitive stares ). But after that mind blowing day outside I now realize that a "brown" tree has purple, and red, and orange, and green in it. Also that a "green" leaf has yellow and brown in it. This made my world a lot more colorful and totally strange.

2. People like relationships: In any movie, tv show, ect its not the stupid jokes and stuff that people throw in that really make the show interesting, its really the relationships that people watch. Will they, wont they, did they, have they, are they? These are the things that really grasp a person's attention, not the OMIGOSH AN INVISIBLE FLYING TUBA jokes.

3. The Mythic Journey Prevails!: The mythic journey is the main basis of most movies. I think that this is mainly due to the "if it aint broke, dont fix it" mentality that most people have. Not only that, but it works if you change the characters and story line around and keep the basic mythic principles. I bet if you watched 10 movies at least 9 of them would be have those basic mythinc qualities that we have all grown to love.

kontrol

This freakishly phychadlic movie has many meanings to me. One being that in order to repent for something that you have done you need to first defeat your inner demons. This is prevolent in this movie b/c before Boshu(yeah I didnt spell that right, but you understand it) could finally forgive himself for whatever he did, he first needed to prove to himself that he is not a failure. This was done by him defeating the killer. Whether the killer was real or not didn't matter in this instance, because after winning the railing contest against the killer(himself???) he realized that he had finally became the "master of two worlds"(see I was paying attention/read) and was able to ascend up the escalators with his guardian angel into a new life. Another meaning I got from this movie was that self pity is never the way to go and you need to believe in yourself. Whatever Boushu did that made him believe that he needed to be punished, I don't think was that bad(seeing as Boushu was such a good guy). Who knows what would have happened had he not pitied himself and punished himself(yeah, we might not have had a movie) but he would have at least not found himself in a dead end, crappy job. His turning point in this movie was made possible because he finally got some chutzpa and stopped pitying himself and realized that he could do better in his life.

Saturday, October 31, 2009

Kontrol totally blew my mind. I have never seen something of such calibur as that. It was a sort of psycological thriller/comedy that was just the greates thing ever. I still dont understand the purpose of the killer though. was it really his psyche or just actually a killer? We may never know. I was totally amazed at the direction of the movie. He used a combination of just so many directing styles that it was amazing. My favorite part of the movie had to be the scene where the psychyatirst came in to interview them. This showed how totally messed up these guys were. wheather it be from work or a previous ailment. i would totally give this movie like 6 stars.

...

not sure whether its supposed to be an idea or an actuall thing but here is 2 for 1:

REVIEW: Bruce Springstein, Live and in Concert!
By: Alex Katz
Bruce (a/k/a “The Boss”) once again proves that his “Glory Days” are far from over!
For those of you who have been living under a rock, the legend, Bruce Springstein, is still touring. Haven’t heard of Bruce? Well, you might as well just up and move to Russia because there is no use for you here in the good old U.S.A.
Bruce is a legend, an icon, a one-of –a kind rock superhero legend!
I recently had the opportunity to go to my first Bruce concert with my father. At first, it was a little weird going to a concert with someone, well, let’s just say is a wee bit older than me. All the way to Giant Stadium he kept talking about his “Glory Days” of college, listening to Bruce, concerts, yada, yada. Politely I nodded, not really listening to (nor appreciating) why he was so excited to be the one to share this experience with me.
After weeks in the car (yes, it can take Long Islanders actual days to get off this island to the other “country” known as New Jersey), we arrived, albeit, late. No fear, though, the concert did not start on time. I was anxious to see who the opening band was. We waited. I looked around. What a crowd! I did not know that people in their 50’s would even want to hang out a place with people in their teens. Yes, I was skeptical to say the least. I knew Springstein had good music, so I decided to give it a shot and pretend that the old people were lost.
The concert started, but with no opening act. Bruce just walked up on stage with all of the house lights still on, which I thought showed a lot about him. The fact that he did not need lights and sounds to signal his entrance showed that just being there was enough for the crowd to go nuts. It was 3 1/2 solid hours of Bruce. To describe the energy would be doing him a disservice. That man can sing and perform! Everyone in that stadium was awestruck! I have never seen anything like this before! What an end to a historic stadium then to have its last bow with an American legend.
At one point in the concert he let the crowd sing the first verse to one of his songs and instead of singing along he decided to crowd surf. He even proposed for a crowd member. How could Elaine say no. It’s Bruce! He at least four encores and just would not stop. The best part of the concert was the fact that it did not feel like a concert. It just felt like a guy up on stage singing a couple of songs along with his buddies having a great time. The best part of the concert, however, was that I got to share it with my best buddy, my dad!

an epic failure so epic.....it was nearly a win

So yeah, we did a movie.....with zombies in it. As many of you deduced, it was an epic fail (but I mean this in a good way seeing as the only way we could go from here is up). I found this to be both a challenging and rewarding experience seeing as we only had 1 hour to do this movie and had to improvise the entire thing b/c we were a man down. But all in all I reallllyyyy want to do this again except mb this time we could actually have a script/buisness plan....etc... haha. The hardest thing about this project was definitely trying not to crack up @ Jesse's gay zombie character.....he does that welll.......hmmmmmmm....naaazzzzz jkjk jess and (sorry about friday).....;)> well I gotta nerd out now......pceeeeeeeeeee

FALLing down (i' ve been watching Disney Channel a little too much)

ok so yeah i havent written in a while but with soccer, tennis, homework, and such its been kind of hard to find a little time to myself...... but i digress. The main reason that im writing this entry is to describe the weather we are having.....no im not just doing small talk. With the ever changing weather i notice moods of people change tremendously as well. For example in the spring time people are very happy, and in the winter not so much, but in the fall its more complicated then that. The mixture of colors creates a mood which is inexpressable in people, but they try their best anyway. For instance my mom goes from jublantly happy when the colors are nice and the weather is nice and everything and everyone is just nice. Sometimes however on bleak cold days (just like today) it is evident that the lack of color creates a void in her mind. Where the yellow orange leaves created a sense of wonder, and bliss, there now stands....well for lack of a better term....she is cranky. And as the seasons come and go, so must i because i hear that little person in my brain telling me to do my soc paper before it's 12 AM........come to think of it he sounds strangely like morgan freeman....wth.........later days.

Frank Loyd Wright

Frank Loyd wright was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin on June 8, 1867. He was concidered a leader in the Prarie School movement of archetecture. "Wright's basic philosophy of architecture was stated primarily through the house form, and he had few major commissions for public buildings, office buildings or skyscrapers in the early years." Some of the structures that he built during the 1900-1920 time period were: The Larkin Administration Building in Buffalo, New York, the Midway Gardens in Chicago, and the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo."In the 1920's, Wright explored the use of poured concrete and abstract sculptural ornamentation in residential construction. He developed a type of construction using precast "textile" concrete blocks which were bound together by steel rods and poured concrete"In 1933 when Wright constructed the small Malcolm E. Willey House, it acted as the begining of a sort of second career for him. The Malcom E. Willey House "represented a revolutionary change in domestic planning; i.e., the living room and dining room were completely unified in a single space, and the kitchen ("workspace") was only separated from the living area by a range of shelves." This house was sort of the connector between the prairie houses and the Usonian houses. Some famous buildings Wright built in the 1930's were: Fallingwater, and the Administration Building of the S.C. Johnson and Son Company. "Fallingwater has been described as "the apotheosis of the horizontal." Its cantilevered terraces soar dramatically over a natural waterfall, and the interior of the house blends seamlessly into the surrounding woods. The Johnson Building, resembling a "gigantic and beautiful machine," is based on the curve rather than the cantilever and turns inward upon itself, ignoring the existence of the outside world." In 1940-41, the Museum of Modern Art held an exhibit as a retrospective of some of the marvelous works he designed. At the exhibit, he received several awards and honors. Some famous buildings that he built in the 40's were: the S. C. Johnson Research Tower, and the Morris Gift Shop.In the fifties 3 of his buildings were chosen by the American Institute of Architects to join the other 11 buildings of his (making the total 14) to be "examples of his architectural contribution to American culture". These buildings are: the Price Company Tower, the Beth Sholom Synagogue, and, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
On April 29, 1959 in Phoenix, Arizona Frank Loyd Wright died.

trust thyself as one would trust thy xbox to get the red rings of death

Well yesterday we went to the community center (and hilarity ensued) whether it was from a pink unbrella to a poorly placed vending machine(sorry). This endevor brought about thoughts of trust. Trust I realized is something that must be given and earned. It is not (at least by me) freely given to any random person at first glance, like "oh he seems nice, I'm going to go and give him my pin #". It is also something that must be self attained because trusting yourself is the most important aspect of surviving in this cruel abyss we call life. If you don't or can't trust yourself you most likely won't trust anyone else. Trusting yourself takes alot of confidence and faith. If you don't trust yourself you will also not be able to do the best you can do, and your work (and personality) will greatly reflect that. If Steve Jobs didn't trust himself, his abilities, and his product then we would all be listening to ......ZUNES......AHHHHHHH! --------point proven.

have a good one-

That was a Cheap Trick!

Well to start, please excuse the formatting of my last blog entry...I still haven't exactly got the hang of this blogging thing..... and this entry was supposed to be from yesterday grrrrrr.......... Anyway... I feel that a blog is sort of like a private cyber diary....that just about everyone can read. Idk exactly what to write next. Maybe some inspirational quote.....nah..... Perhaps a profound statement that could wrap up my day in a nice little package.......pass.....So you will have to settle for this: Today sucked. Not just a normal suckiness...but that kind of mind numbing boredom mixed with a tinge of rotton milk with a spritz of annoyance....just simply that kind of suckiness(is that even a word?).It starts with last night. I couldn't fall asleep and was convinced in my pre-sleep twilight state of mind that every time I rolled over, I was being watched by that weird Saw Doll. Needless to say, it sucked. Finally getting over that inane paranoia, I finally got half an hour of the pure rejuvenating sleep, when I was awoken by my mom strongly suggesting that I do my social studies homework (which actually was done the previous day....unbeknownst to her). After that whole ordeal of telling her it was already done, I was unable to fall back asleep and decided to face the day. Then( oh joy) it was off to my soccer game. Now you might say, "well Alex, it was a lovely day out to play soocer" to which I would have to agree. What slandered my experience was the fact that I am currently recooperating from a soccer injury which prevents me from actually playing sports at this time. So, my hour and a half that should have been spent knocking in the teeth of my oblivious opponents, was spent on the sidelines breathing in the lovely stench of sweaty guys........Yes, this was my day...and yes it could not get any worse...or so I thought. It turns out my math which I so dilegently did yesterday, was soaked (with something) and illegable. I thought this was bad luck so I did it over and thought nothing else of it. Then, all of a sudden, while editing my english homework, my computer got a virus. Now call me crazy, but this just wasn't bad luck....someone up top was screwing with me....royally. My english was gone AND my Pac Man high score was gone, (which was aquired by not interacting with real people but rather sitting in my dark cave.....) curse the fates! I shall end this ballad with a quote now to prevent you from being further depressed by my day (or dying from hysteria at my expense...either way) "LIFE SUCKS...get used to it, now clean your room"-My DAD

Alex does the 1st day picture assignment

Very photogenic, you can really see she was enjoying herself!

just keep smiling, it will all be over soon...

My favorite thing about this picture is the fact that she has a inquisitive look upon her face.

I like this photo because of the look of humorous realization on her face.

This picture sticks out because of her intent gaze at the ceiling, i makes me wonder what she is looking at.

I think the picture conveys a feeling of embarrassment which is quite funny.

I like the look of bubbly happiness on her face in this picture.

"Dude! I got an idea!" I chose this picture because it conveys exactly that feeling.

I like the intensity of his eyes, what a powerful stare!

This picture has a lot of warmth to it. She seems like she is enjoying having her picture taken.

I like this photo because it makes me wonder what is happenig off frame.
GO WILDCATS!!! The look of ferosity on her face scared me.
Sweet dreams..........The first day of school can really hit you hard.

Man, i would love to be in on that joke.

This picture conveys seriousness. It looks like she has something important to say.

I like her eyes and smile in this picture.

This picture captures a great expression on his face, it makes me want to laugh with him.

Very "cousin itt". Addams family anyone?
This looks like a scene directly from a horror film..."OMG he's
behind that door!"
Sweet Zack Braff pose. It looks like he's day dreaming right in the middle of class.
Due to my insecure mentality i
was unable to choose the picture i liked the most....so i chose the one i hated the least.
Loving the drama here, looks like she just got some bad news.

She has a look of amazement in this picture.
In this picture she has a good intelectual look.
In this picture she looks like she is contemplating a thought. Wonder what it is?

I chose this pix because it looks like she has done this before
